Merry Christmas… here’s to many more (Dec 2013)

My BFF Kim and I dressed up as The Doctor and The TARDIS (from the TV show Doctor Who) at San Diego Comic-Con 2013

To all my friends and family (and random strangers on the internet),

Here’s to an amazing Christmas 2013!

I had a pretty crazy (and pretty amazing) 2013. Here’s some the highlights.

10 Year College Reunion & Chicago

In February I was able to travel to Chicago for my 10th Year college reunion! I also got to see my adorable nieces (Izzy and Hizzle as I call them online). It was so much fun to spend a couple weeks in Chicago, see my old friends, visit my alma mater, and go to Founder’s Week at Moody again!

Izzy and Hizzle also loved working with me (they were on my iPad, I was on my computer).

International TableTop Day
The first quarter of my year was spent working really hard working on this world-wide holiday called TableTop Day for Geek & Sundry. With my awesome co-worker Boyan we created an event where we asked people all over the world to get together and play games. For it’s first year there were thousands and thousand of events all over the world (in 60 some odd countries), including this event at the South Pole station!

It was a lot of work, but a ton of fun. I even hosted my own event at our church. I still get people asking me if we can get together and play games. Now, I host a monthly game day that friends from all over LA come and join me. This past month we held it at the Game Haus (a new board game coffee shop in Glendale) and 9 folks showed up to play! We had a blast.

I even helped out some at the live streaming event we did in LA. Here’s Tara and Yuri before they played “Ticket to Ride”:

New Job!
In April I left Geek & Sundry and went to a new job at Strategic Revolution. I’m now a manager of a small team of social media account executives. I work on a bunch of great clients including some tabletop game publishers, restaurants, fashion stores, musicians and celebrities. I really love my new job. I get to work from home (which is huge for me) most of the week. I commute up to North Hollywood once a week, which gives me a great view of LA and Hollywood! I’m very happy at work and can’t wait to see what the new year brings.

(Kim and I at Nerd HQ at ComicCon)

In July my best friend Kim and I spent nearly a week in San Diego for San Diego Comic-Con. It’s one of the largest pop culture conventions in the US. It was a fun experience made even more fun by just spending time with one of my best friends. We dressed up in costumes every day and met up with old friends and made some new ones. It was very hard to say good-bye to Kim when she went home to Colorado on Sunday of the convention.

(Sarah, Andrea and I at GenCon)

In August, I went for the first time to Gen-Con, a large board game convention in Indiana. I had a blast spending time with my friend Andrea, her husband Marcus and their friends Crystal and Chad. We stayed up playing board games almost every night until the small hours of the morning. I also got a lot of time with my client Albino Dragon (and their CEO Erik), Boyan, Wil Wheaton and new friend Sarah (who works at G&S now). I learned some new games, made some new work connections, and had a lot of fun.

(The Creators of The Pretender and me)

In October, I took my parents and brother Ryne to Stan Lee’s Comikaze! We had a blast there! We got to meet the creators of one of my favorite TV shows, The Pretender and Molly Quinn (the actress from Castle).

(King of Tokyo and mini Joss Whedon)

My family has always loved playing board games, but because of TableTop and working at Geek & Sundry we’ve been playing a whole lot more games. I started a monthly group that gets together and plays board games. We’re now meeting up in Glendale at the Game Haus (everyone is invited, so if you’re reading this join us for Jan 11th’s game night)!

Mom, Dad, Ryne and I often play games after worship on Sunday as well. Family favorites include Wits and Wagers, Ticket to Ride, Qwirkle and Takenoko.

(Heidi and I!)

In addition to seeing my BFF once again, I got to see a lot of other friends. In March, my friend Heidi came out to CA and she, her family and I went out for a fairly loud but delicious Mexican dinner!

(Caroline, Rosa, myself, and Kat)

I also got to meet friends of mine from a Facebook group for the first time! We had a wonderful afternoon getting to know each other face to face. I always love meeting online friends because it always feels like we’ve ALWAYS been friends.

Speaking of friends, I got to know a crazy new group of them in the form of the Wayward Backer group on Facebook. It’s a bunch of folks who met while backing the Kickstarter for Albino Dragon’s Name of the Wind deck. They’re fun and keep me laughing throughout the week.

There’s been a lot of new friends this year, I’m super blessed to know them all!

This year for my birthday I celebrated in a bunch of ways! At our tabletop game day a lot of my local friends got together and spoiled me with cool presents. My parents, Lisa, and my friend Kristin and her husband took me to Hunger Games! Then I took my parents to see the Doctor Who 50th special. It was a really fun month.

I’m putting the last touches on preparations for my sister, my nieces and my brother-in-law to come for Christmas. They’ll be in late tonight. It’s the first time in five years we’ve all been in the same place. And the first time in five years we’ve spent Christmas together. I’m looking forward to playing a lot of games, eating a lot of food, and having fun together as a family.

To You
This year hasn’t been the greatest for a lot of my friends and even myself, but I want you all to know how very much you’re loved by me. Please take some time out of this Christmas to remember what’s important. Let someone love on you and show you Christmas joy. Enjoy all the good things you do have in your life and be thankful for it. Tell someone you love them. And, most of all, have a great Christmas.
