I got several very strange Twitter messages today all leading up to me realizing that I’m now a character in Scott Sigler’s Nocturnal.

Not only that, I’m an awesome character.

I’ve had many awesome things in my life and this is one of the awesomest.

I was surfing around the blogosphere today and found this awesome comic/blog Dead Robot.

The latest post was about “issues” this blogger has. It made me laugh so I thought I’d make my own list.

1. I really can’t sleep with socks on.

2. My entire house can be trashed, but I must have a clean toilet

3. I doodle in meetings

4. I never screw caps back on all the way unless I make a conscious effort to

5. If I see red while shopping I have to go out of my way to see what it is

6. I start listening to podcasts from the latest episode. Unlike a lot of people who start at 1 and go on.

7. I really can’t stand Dr. Phil – even if it’s a commercial on mute I have to switch the channel.

I’m sure there’s more, but that’s all I can think of right now.

So, I’m a firm believer in social media and networking right? I believe in Twitter, Facebook, and yes.. even Myspace (though I rarely go on there). I’m a blogger, a podcaster, a forum-girl. I avidly recruit people to the social media world (hey, I got my dad blogging….).

So WHY am I still being ridiculed for my love of social media?

Tell me people. What’s the stigma? Why is there one? Can’t we all just get along?

Social media what-ing?

I have been avidly involved in the internet since I was about 12. I remember when I first joined the internet culture my dad had gotten AOL and we were connecting at the lightening fast speed of “slower than a turtle”. I often brought a book along with me to wait out the connection and downloading times. Shortly after joining I found AOL groups and made a ton of friends in the Sherlock Holmes and mystery areas. Ever after that I was hooked. I joined groups, started IMing, blogged, chatted and did the whole forum posting thing. To this day I’m addicted to social networking.

In my own mind this isn’t something new. I’ve been doing for it so long it’s natural. I love the podiosphere (for podcasting), the blogosphere (for blogging) and have a lot of friends all over the world that I communicate and interact with on a daily basis. Yet, I forget that this still is intimidating and unfamiliar territory for other people.

I forget, that is, until someone reminds me.

This past Sunday I was explaining to a lot of different people at church about my job. And a lot of them are so far removed from using the internet for social networking that they go “Myspace-wha?” “Second Life-huh?”

Now these are not, by any means, dumb or slow people. These are very talented people who just haven’t “jacked in” to the web and all it has to offer. They email, google and stuff like that but the internet is a practical tool for them to navigate their own real life experience – not connect with people half-way around the world.

It’s fascinating to me to think people don’t blog, don’t listen to podcasts and don’t even really grasp the concept of Myspace. My dad (who has been listening to me talk about Twitter for the past couple weeks) mentioned it in his sermon a couple Sundays ago and got completely blank stares.

So social media taking over our lives I guess is still far away…. but I can’t wait to convert more people to it shiny and enticing ways.

Ohhh the internets…

So I was channel surfing the other day (this whole “cable television” thing is new and strange since I haven’t had it for awhile myself) and stumbled across a PBS documentary about social networking. Since I’m interested in that I decided to watch, but realized that everyone looked VERY 90′s in the footage. Intregued I continued watching. What they were saying was extremely relevant to now, but the footage was dated. Then, at the end of the program, I realized it WAS made in the 90′s.

It’s amazing that people realized the impact of social networking and media, even then. They talked about customizable internet experiences (which is what Web 2.0 is all about) – they were prognosticating what is happening now. Very cool.

Of course, it also reminded me how bad my hair looked then.

What does it take?

I’ve often wondered, especially with my new full-time job search, what does it take to be famous? To be hired? To be noticed?

Society has always favored a select few. No matter where you go in time or space there seems to be an “elite”. Those with the position, the money, the charm to be considered “upper upper class”.

Not that I necessarily want to be one of those people, I enjoy where I’ve “come from” (as the phrase goes). I was homeschooled, born to a pair of loving parents who never have been anything more than middle class (and sometimes we were scraping the barrel of the middle class bracket).

I received a world-class education. I, for example, can quote parts of Macbeth – while some of my peers think Shakespeare is just a fun word that rhymes with beer.

I’m starting to sound snarky – I blame it on the amount of House MD I’ve been watching.

I have also been watching the AWESOME series Veronica Mars. In one episode a girl learns that she was switched at birth. Her bio-parents were uber wealthy and her other parents were not. It made me think about this whole wealth thing and what does it take.

If I had been born in another family, with other circumstances, or a different education would I be the same person? (This my friends is what’s known as the nature vs. nurture debate). Makes for good fiction, but no one really has a good answer.

A person at their core is more than the sum of their circumstances. I’ve been in numerous conversations with people who want to excuse behavior because of someone’s circumstances. Yet, I know countless of other people in the exact same set of circumstances who haven’t acted out, broken the law or needed years of professional counseling. Why? Because a person is different.

This debate was further demonstrated by my parents conversation about the differences between my sister and I. We are like the sun and the moon in most cases. Same environment, almost the same set of life events – but two different people.

I guess the long and the short of it is I don’t know. I don’t know what makes us all so different. Don’t know where a serial killer goes wrong. Don’t know why I have three square meals a day and some kid in Africa is starving tonight. But it makes for some hard pondering.
